DRIVING TO THE CRATER
Zao Echo Line crosses the volcanic Zao mountain range between Yamagata and Miyagi Prefectures. The 26-kilometer route climbs through dramatically changing landscapes—forests give way to volcanic terrain, ultimately reaching views of the famous Okama crater lake. Active geology creates unforgettable scenery.
The Okama, or "cooking pot," is the route's crown jewel. This emerald-colored crater lake fills a volcanic caldera, its waters changing hue with weather and seasons. A short walk from the highest parking area leads to the viewing platform. Few natural sights match its otherworldly beauty.
Winter transforms Zao into something surreal. The famous "juhyo" or snow monsters appear—trees encased in snow and ice, creating ghostly formations across the mountainside. While the Echo Line itself closes for winter, ski areas provide access to this phenomenon. Seasonal transformation defines this mountain.
Hot springs (onsen) dot the region, offering post-drive relaxation. Zao Onsen village has welcomed visitors for over 1,000 years, with strongly acidic waters reputed for healing properties. The combination of mountain driving and onsen bathing epitomizes Japanese travel culture. Body and machine both need rest.
TOHOKU EXPLORATION
Zao Echo Line rewards combination with other Tohoku driving roads. The Bandai-Azuma Skyline lies to the south, while Aspite Line crosses to the north. Building a multi-day Tohoku driving itinerary allows thorough exploration of the region's volcanic landscapes. Connected routes create journeys.
Access is straightforward from the Tohoku Expressway. Both the Yamagata and Miyagi sides connect to major highways, making Zao easily incorporated into broader travel plans. The route functions as a scenic shortcut between prefectures. Practical and beautiful coexist.
