CROSSING THE SETO INLAND SEA
Shimanami Kaido is Japan's most scenic long-distance driving route. Spanning 60 kilometers across six islands, this expressway connects Onomichi in Hiroshima Prefecture to Imabari in Ehime Prefecture via a series of spectacular bridges. The Seto Inland Sea stretches in every direction. No other drive offers these views.
Seven bridges of varying designs carry traffic across the island chain. The Kurushima-Kaikyo Bridge, at 4,105 meters, ranks among the world's longest suspension bridges. Each crossing presents new perspectives on the surrounding seascape, scattered islands, and distant coastlines. Engineering and nature in harmony.
Unlike mountain touge, Shimanami Kaido is about visual grandeur rather than technical challenge. The expressway portion offers sweeping curves and gentle grades, allowing drivers to appreciate the scenery. Speed limits are enforced; this is about the journey, not laptimes. Different roads serve different purposes.
The islands themselves reward exploration beyond the main expressway. Exit to local roads and discover fishing villages, citrus groves, and quiet harbors. Each island has its own character—some mountainous, some flat, all surrounded by the calm inland sea. Detours enhance the experience.
PLANNING THE CROSSING
The full expressway crossing takes approximately one hour without stops. But rushing defeats the purpose—plan for a full day with island exploration, meals at local restaurants, and multiple photo stops. Sunset crossings are particularly memorable. Allow time to absorb the beauty.
The route is also famous among cyclists. Dedicated cycling paths run parallel to the expressway on each bridge, drawing touring cyclists from around the world. Be aware of bicycle traffic when exiting to island roads. Multiple forms of transit share this corridor.
